Dee leaned against a blackened tree and pulled off a boot, upending it to dump out a rock, muttering about how it even got in there when the boot went almost to her knee. The top of the tree was ripe with fruit but also seemed to be engulfed in magical flame. She couldn't tell if touching it would burn her or not, so she decided against trying to pick any of the fruit. The food wasn't why they were here anyway - she and Trevor had heard stories about a beast that was stalking this area lately and it was starting to scare off the tourists. You'd think with all the people coming by here to look at the fancy magic fire trees it would scare off anything else but apparently this one was either particularly angry or particularly lost because it had stuck around long enough for them to have heard about it when they'd been almost a day away.
Of course, Trevor was instantly interested. The stories seemed to be conflicted over what it was, but everyone knew one thing: it appeared to be as covered in flames as the trees were, and nobody could get close enough to see anything better. Naturally they would want to get close enough to see it, because Trevor wanted to study the darn thing. He always wanted to study the thing. Whether it was a friendly floating poof or a deadly flaming beast you could count on good ol' monster chronicler Trevor to want to get all up in its business and learn as much as he could about it. And Demetra got to make sure he didn't get melted into a sad puddle by the lava part of it.
She had come as prepared as possible considering they didn't know what to prepare for except 'fire' - she was wearing leather armour and some of her plate but she was pretty sure if this thing could spit fire or whatnot she probably didn't want too much metal going on. Her shortsword was in the scabbard on her belt, not drawn yet as they had no indication the beast was anywhere nearby, but available just in case. She absently fiddled with the storage charm around her neck, hearing the tings and clinks as her many rings tapped against the polished ruby. Her shield was stored for now, but she would take it out when it was needed. Besides she didn't want to get it burnt to a crisp and have to replace it. If this thing was all firey though she might get some use from the elemental burst spell she'd learned all those years ago - splash that sucker with some water if things got too heated.
The area they were in was only sparsely populated - the midday heat and stories of a scary beast were enough to keep all but the most stubborn tourist away. Still, the foot traffic this place saw was enough that it would be hard to track the beast, but from the stories it seemed to stalk people more than people stalked it so maybe it would find them first. "So Trev, what's the plan?" she asked, holding a hand over her eyes to shield against the sun and looking back at her companion.
