The warm hand tugged her down the hall, insistent that she follow, and Tehodis resisted only by whining: "I was up all night studying-- It's not even brightmoon yet! I need to sleep..."
"I've been away all year, and I don't want to miss this moment. Just a few minutes, and then I'll return you to bed, alright?" His voice was a coo in her ears and she found it impossible to continue her complaint. Instead, she pouted, and plodded along through the chilled halls with him, the torches lighting as they passed them one by one. Eventually they came to the balcony door, a massive structure of wood that would be impossible to move if not for the magic that had it blowing open with his mere will. As they quietly parted, Tehodis' face turned to awe.
The view from the balcony was always beautiful. The castle towered over the ocean shore, looking out onto the water - something Tehodis always felt drawn to. The moons seemed to remain ever-perched just above the water, reflecting their phases in the water, close enough to touch if you just sailed a little farther out. Today, however, was something different. The moons were not alone. There was a third being in the sky, competing with the crescent and gibbous shapes competing for her eye. The sun. It was just beginning to crest the water, and it bathed everything with a purple-toned glow. The sand seemed to glitter under its light, and the water looked like something from a dream. As Tehodis stood stunned, he wrapped his arms around her, his fingers intertwining with her's, his head nestling into the crook of her neck. "I told you," He taunted.
"I've never seen the sun so close to Malscure before, I thought that--" His soft kips on her cheek stilled her, and she took in the beauty of the moment. It was perfect. But she knew it wouldn't last. "I miss you," She told him, and he nodded against her, his nose brushing into her hair.
"Sriae travels the world all year, floating around Fortuna and offering light to all but Malscure. But once a year, she finds her way here. Home, where her sister is always waiting. One day a year, during The Sisters, she shines with Khades," His explanation was in a low, soft voice. Intimate. No one else was seeing what they were seeing.
"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," She sighed, squeezing his hand and breaking away from him to lean against the edge of the balcony. He followed her, one hand light on her back as she walked. His face was a smile as he watched her watch the sunrise. "It doesn't hold a candle to you, Tehodis," He offered, enjoying the sweet smile that grew on her face, and the way her eyes glinted as she looked at him. He loved her. "Since I became imperator, I have been just like the sun. Always travelling, never where I'm meant to be. Or with who I'm meant to be with... But once a year, I return, and find you. Always waiting. Patient. Perfect."
"I miss you," She repeated, turning to him, and placing a hand on his cheek. He smiled and shook his head a little, his hand meeting her's and removing it from his face gently, "I don't want you to wait for me anymore. I... Want you to come with me, Tehodis. Leave this, and travel the world with me. I'm not complete without you, I'm not anything without you. And when we return home in a year... We'll marry in this same sunrise. To Streike with tradition. This... This is us." As he spoke, he had settled one hand at her waist, the other capturing her cheek. He watched her eyes for her response, having worried about this for so long. She had her schooling, her family, she had a home and life in Rielcia. But he couldn't be without her anymore.
Her smile warmed every part of his being.
"Yes," She whispered, one hand grasping his collar and the other his neck as she pulled him forth to bring their lips together. His hands wandered to her back, pulling her to him more desperately, every fibre of his body needing to touch every piece of her's. Breathlessly as they broke apart he whispered, "I love you, Tehodis."
"I love you, Tristan."
Tehodis woke up.
