The 10th of the Scales of Judgement
Late Night at the Broken Temple Fort
"They're here!" The voices from the watch cried out. Ellis felt a sense of relief so strong that he collapsed, falling on his front to prevent Xanthe from being knocked about. He was out of breath. Exhausted. His chest began to hurt again. He wondered briefly why it hadn't hurt during the journey - and he realized that perhaps the voice was doing more than just guiding him. Perhaps it was strengthening him. And now, at the temple, he had achieved his goal.
Boots thumped in the grass around him and pulled him to his feet, a soldier on either side shouldering an arm and jogging Ellis to the temple. "He doesn't look so good--" Ellis could hardly make out the words, feeling as if they were being said underwater. "Hey, you! Go tell them that they've come back!" "Yeah!-- Oh... Should I tell them--?" "Just say they're with the doctor! Go!"
The next thing Ellis heard was the tearing of fabric, and a weight being lifted from his back as Xanthe was pulled from him. He wanted to fight them off, his instinct telling him to protect her at all costs, but his chest throbbed and he uselessly flailed his arms. "Danton! Danton, it's fine, relax. You'll be fine, just-- Stop fighting! Just lay down!" Finally he did, his head turning to the side and seeing Xanthe on a cot next to him. He reached out a hand to grab her's, but someone stepped between them -- someone with a pristine white toga.
Pelagia Xista was between them, and Feofil Peti was at the foot of their beds. Feofil seemed focused on Xanthe, and Pelagia was at first - but she turned to Ellis as Ilithiya noted that he was awake. The elven girl was at the foot of his bed, her eyes alight with concern, their gaze tracing the shape of the massive scar that was visible on his chest. Ellis couldn't be certain, but he thought he made out the shape of Erik at the door... His thoughts were confirmed when the bird man began to speak - again, sounding distant. "They must have been attacked same as our people were. Feofil, it's like I told you. The Attonians, they don't--" Feofil raised a hand to silence Erik, and dismissed him with a "Now is not the time, Erik. Calm yourself." Ellis tried to speak, but his voice was a hoarse whimper. He tried to grasp Pelagia's toga, but his fingers wouldn't tighten. Had he rested during his journey? Feofil spoke again: "Lord Xista, what are your thoughts?"
