Xanthe listened as Ellis translated Feofil's brief description of the treaty. Keeping Atton as it was, protecting her people, preventing the invaders from taking it over were all things she had been hoping for. She understood a fair amount of the last bit herself, but when Ellis didn't automatically translate it she nudged him and he did so. When the rest of the world agreed on peace, they would remove their forces and leave Atton. At first, this sounded like everything Xanthe had wanted - the invaders would leave and everything would be exactly as it was before the whole mess had begun. But when Ellis spoke again, she realized exactly what it meant. Ellis was a soldier too, and as much as he didn't act like it and how close they were, he had come to Atton because of the war as well. Which meant that when it was over, the treaty would have him leave. It would have everyone leave. 'For good'.
Ellis stood and moved over to the piano, and Xanthe took the opportunity to stand as well, still feeling ill but slightly less as time passed. "Feofil," she began questioningly, "Treaty force all to leave? Can some stay, in peace?" She knew it was a long way before the whole world might agree to peace with Atton, but once they did, once they stopped trying to kill her people and take her land, why shouldn't they be able to stay? Surely in the outside world people could move between countries freely. As much as she had not liked the idea at first, Atton was now a part of the 'outside world', and could they ever really go back to how things were before? She couldn't agree to a treaty that would force Ellis away, nor anyone else who wanted to take refuge in her country with respect for it and its people.
