The Mysterious Beasts of Fortuna
"Monsters" first came into being in Fortuna as a result of the influence of Miynie, Deity of Magic, and her mist which permeated the world. Though this is the shorthand by which they are commonly referred to, their more technical name is "Beasts of the Mist", or alternatively "Phantom Beasts"; these two terms are more commonly used to describe the more harmless of Fortuna's strange creatures, while "Monster" is more primarily used to refer to the more dangerous creatures.
Whatever you call them, these creatures would never have evolved naturally in the world of Fortuna without the magical influence that changed the world. Of course, even despite their fantastic range and seemingly overpowering traits in some cases, the very magic that made them has also deeply affected the world around them, and given even more "natural" beings, including regular animals, the means to coexist beside these creatures. As such, while some of these beasts are quite deadly to an unwary traveler, they've done surprisingly little to actually affect the natural world around them, almost as though the gods themselves wished to see to it that their natural world be preserved.
Although, not all of these beasts have had no effect on their world - quite to the contrary, some of the deadliest creatures listed here have earned their reputations solely because of how drastically they could, or in some cases already have, changed the world around them.
Here you will find documentation of the Phantom Beasts that call Fortuna home, where you might find them, and other useful information. Happy hunting!
Deific Matrons
Though Miynie would have been content to rule them herself, happy to be the Goddess of Monsters as well as Magic, she alone was no longer capable of this feat once her power had been split apart into the gods of her Pantheon. As such, each of her sisters took up the task of presiding over certain creatures in the world, depending on what kinds of magics or physiologies they based their forms from. This was deemed as necessary, as otherwise their existence would have upset the Magical Balance of Fortuna, and none had the heart to simply exterminate all of the world's Phantom Beasts to solve this problem. Of course, even if they could bring themselves to do so, the existence of Miynie's pantheon would merely bring more monsters into the world eventually, thereby rendering it moot.
For those deities who could not take up the task themselves, due to being indisposed for whatever reason, Mighty Streike, Goddess of Death, was tasked with using her powers to forcibly bind certain creatures to the souls of those deities, so that even her sleeping (or bound) sisters could do their part.
It is said that any who is a true and devout follower of a certain Deity will never be harmed by a Phantom Beast that exists under that deity's jurisdiction, but it is unknown if this is quite true - either because those who think themselves true followers are not in fact as devout as they believe, or because those who have indeed never come under harm from certain creatures have never actually encountered them. As such, it is something of a wive's tale, and it is not advised that one tests it, especially against some of Fortuna's most feared creatures.
It is also said that Monsters which exist under the pantheons of sleeping or negligent deities are known to be much more dangerous or rambunctious. This is much more largely believed to be true, especially due to the fact that so many of the creatures said to be under the preoccupied Streike's jurisdiction are incredibly violent.
About this Info
Natural Habitat: This will indicate the country where the beast in question is most primarily known to be found. A number of these creatures can be found in other locations as well, especially if they've been domesticated, but this still has varying levels of occurrence depending on the creature.
Intellect: This identifies the monster's general level of intelligence on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Most beasts fall into the range of 3 or less, with 1 being rather mindless and incognizant; they typically run completely on instinct. Meanwhile, 3 reflects beings capable of social functions and receptiveness to suggestion from sentient Fortunans, lending to the possibility of them being pets. 4 is an exceptional degree of intelligence and understanding, and rarely occurs. Such creatures are often considered untamable, though it has been observed as possible. 5, meanwhile, is a level of sentience that rivals the average Fortunan, and typically the only thing setting such creatures apart from the Fortunans is the lack of organized society, an inability to integrate with those outside of their own kind, or the presence of too many basal instincts.
Threat Level: This value, also from 1 to 5 stars, describes the general level of aggression and danger present in a creature. Some beasts, despite overwhelming power, are fairly unthreatening due to docile natures (so long as they aren't provoked). Others are extremely aggressive, and if they are also very powerful on top of that, must be avoided at all costs.

When tamed, they are said to be excellent and loyal companions, as well as intelligent, but they will always have an unbreakable wild streak that advises caution in handling.
In the wild, on the other hand, they are best not approached, as they can be quite vicious and quick to see you as potential prey. The bird portion of a Griffon is widely varied, and thus defines a number of subspecies with different behaviors, while the color of the lion portion of the beast can also vary. Trained Griffons can be ridden as a method of transportation, though it's typically only skilled handlers who can get them to allow such a thing.
Creature of Veira
★ Though varying by bird-type, typically possesses sharp talons on the forelimbs, capable of powerful grip.
★ Also varying, its beak is often very powerful and capable of deep gauging.
★ Both aggressive and proud, it will fight more intensely the more injured it gets.
★ Some are proficient in Transmutation WIND magic, amplifying the air they displace with their wing flaps into powerful gusts.
★ Crippling its wings is a major advantage.
★ On land, its front quarters are usually more clumsy.
★ Some say it will always remember an act of kindness from someone while it was injured.

The second is because the Grimalkin is a creature known for its ability to shape shift. These animals are capable of morphing themselves into the appearance of anything they see, though the sophistication of this transformation depends heavily on how much of it the animal can actually perceive. As such, small surface details may look off, and can thus tip you off to a transformed Grimalkin. They can also mimic voices of living things after some exposure to it, aiding in their convincing performance. But while more intelligent than most animals, Grimalkins are still beasts, and are limited in their capacity for thinking and understanding. They base their performances on mimicry; as such, asking surprisingly simple questions can often be enough to expose a Grimalkin.
Creature of Miynie
Creature of Khades
★ Though Grimalkin do not typically have sinister motives of their own for their transformations, they may often be at the command of someone else with more untoward ends, which is the real reason they are considered dangerous.
★ A Grimalkin that has a strong understanding of its target can pull off transformations that are virtually impossible to see through.
★ A Grimalkin's transformations are limited to a maximum of one hour; all studies have confirmed that they cannot hold an assumed shape for any longer than this, and must rest for a duration equivalent to their transformed time.
★ Due to the potential dangers and reputation, they are banned in most countries outside of the Eleusia continent, limiting the likelihood of encountering one.
★ Divination Magic users can use spells of sight to see through a Grimalkin's disguise.
★ If ever you are suspicious around someone, asking some personal or invasive questions can help expose them, as they have limited intelligence.

From that point forward, The Guardians will protect both the animal and their nest with absolute ferocity, viciously attacking any potential intruders, until the eggs hatch. Once they have done so, The Guardians are then permitted to eat the discarded egg shells, leftover yolks, and any dead young that did not successfully hatch, gaining the necessary proteins to fertilize themselves for the birthing of their own young.
Creature of Fayana
★ The danger these creatures pose depends entirely on when they are found.
★ If a Guardian is not currently protecting a nest, they tend to completely ignore Fortunans, as their primary prey actually consists of small mammals.
★ If encountered while they are protecting a nest, however, they are incredibly vicious and deadly, boasting many skills.
★ High ground speed.
★ Incredible biting power with rows of fangs .
★ Exceptional flexibility and spatial wareness, reacting to attackers on all sides with claw swipes or tail smacks.
★ No countermeasures necessary when it's not protecting a nest; just leave it alone on sight.
★ If encountered while protecting, get as far away from the nest as possible; it will not leave the area.
★ If forced to fight it, limiting its mobility is the most effective way to gain advantage; use ICE, MINERAL, NATURE, or other magics specialized for binding arts.

They stand twenty feet tall from head to foot (with their necks fully elevated), and can measure up to thirty from nose to tail. They sport the typical accoutrements of Dragons as well, including a pair of leathery wings capable of strong flight, an internal ignition chamber that can produce Fire Breath, rows of fangs, and sharp claws attached to stocky, powerful limbs. This Dragon is capable of thriving almost anywhere, though they tend to stay away from the far North for their own comfort (though it has been observed they are capable of living there when forced).
They are primarily known to hunt mid-sized mammals and occasionally livestock, and while dangerous to mankind in the wild, they demonstrate the same typical level of aversion for Fortunans as most wild things do, attacking only in anamolous circumstances. This is the second most common domestic Dragon, after the Cyclops Dagger, which is a specially-bred offshoot of this species.
Creature of Veira
Creature of Paiia
★ The typical: Claws, Fangs, Fire breath, and Strength.
★ Typically leaves Fortunans alone to live its wild life, but is certainly not above attacking if one draws too close.
★ Untrusting of people in general in the wild.
★ Make for very solid, loyal pets when domesticated, though they tend to require a firm hand.
★ When fighting one, they are averse to cold, so use ICE Magic.
★ They don't particularly excel in any of the "Dragon Danger Areas", being only reasonably strong, reasonably fast, reasonably capable in the air, and having reasonably potent fire. Though at the same time, this means they lack a concrete weakness.

It's a very interesting story, the likes of which is told around camp getaways late at night, but it seems impractically true. Artavia's government doesn't even recognize that there was once a city in Himalius, after all. And yet... there are dedicated explorers who have found strange, out of place remnants of concrete or bent out of shape power line poles in random, innocuous spots in the district. There are family records in Himalius from years back that, when traced forward, mysteriously and abruptly disappear... Delving too deep into the mystery has left many people very unnerved, and suddenly not wanting to know the truth.

The Levias is described as a gargantuan whale or serpent, dwarfing in size all other living things on the planet (as well as all animals ever known to have existed in the past). There is a famous story that this beast once terrorized Aurcaele long ago, crushing landscapes and swallowing early iterations of sky boats. But then a daring sky sailor named Leviathan, who piloted some of the first fully-realized airships, was able to scare the beast off with his expert flying and his ship's weapons, and the beast was never seen again.
Most people the world over insist that it's all a bunch of hogwash, as a creature as massive as the Levias is described would be absolutely impossible to miss flying around the world, and so it seems unlikely that only the people of Aurcaele would have stories about it. And if it DID exist, where did it go? It's just too big to be possible. Still, the people of the town of Leviathan, named for the famous sailor and his battle against his namesake, continually insist that the tale is true.
Creature of Veira (?)
★ Its sheer size is enough to account for all the threat in the world.

They run on four legs on land, but are capable of standing and moving on two, freeing their powerful forearms for use in killing. They have vicious, merciless instincts, and attack virtually everything that isn't one of them (and sometimes they even attack their own). They are also known pack hunters, forming groups of up to seven individuals. Standing at seven feet tall at the shoulder in their usual stooped posture, they can reach twenty feet in total length from nose to tail. This size, combined with the fact that Nepradiles kill more people each year than most soldiers kill in a lifetime, has earned them their feared reputation, and even a position on the "Kill on Sight" list. Now if only killing them were actually an easy feat...

Though these grand creatures are spoken of in stories alongside dragons frequently, the difference is that while Dragons are a diverse family of creatures that can actually be found in Fortuna, there is no one who has ever discovered and documented a living Phoenix. But most are familiar with the stories: tremendous birds of living flame, commanding dominion over fire and being nearly indestructable. And of course, should they ever die, they burst back to life as a new flame, effectively being immortal. They say that none can stand against a Phoenix's never-ending well of stamina and might, but they also say that the Phoenix is non-violent. Though their purpose is unknown, the Natives have been observed making offerings to the creature, and performing what appears to be a salute or dance of some kind, and then afterward a noose is tossed around the creature's neck. This bears the appearance of a leash, but no pulling is neccessary, as once the process is complete, the P'Nux Lejan seems to willingly follow the Natives. Succubi usually possess beasts, using illusion magic to make those beasts appear as beautiful women, but a Succubus is often betrayed by the innate intelligence of the beast they are possessing - it dulls their own minds when controlling a stupid creature. Their goal: to siphon the soul of their victim through seduced acts of intimacy, so that they can take the corrupted soul back to Ephilroa for their demonic masters.
Creature of Diassei
★ Enchantment magic that can cloud their victim's mind, to the point that even after revealing their true form the victim may still wish to engage with them.

Reveal

Most mages seem to agree that a Unicorn possesses perhaps some form of divination, able to look into the heart of whomever approaches it, and that it judges its rider based on what it sees there. While many seem to think that a Unicorn will only allow a good person to ride it, there are some who would beg to differ, believing that it all just comes down to which qualities a specific Unicorn prefers in a potential rider. Unicorns are known to have blood with restorative properties, but poaching them for this use is strictly forbidden in Acheron, Celestia, and Aebrynis. Only in Eleusia are there no laws against it.

When they surface, it's because they require nourishment that the dirt can't supply, and they start seeking live prey. They hunt based on sound and vibrations, but they detest magic for reasons researchers are unsure of. As such, most modern cities charm their borders with basic spells that do nothing other than exist, giving off magical energy, as it prevents the Vermors from burrowing its way into those cities and snatching people from their homes through holes in their floors. Most governments in general try to keep this creature contained to specific areas with similar charms, for they could be an omnivorous menace to every country besides Rielcia, otherwise.

Draconeum Spiramortis

The Weirdire is a dragon that lacks skin. As an adaptation for survival, it instead secretes a toxic, web-like substance that covers its body and encases it in a thick caste. Even when hardened in this state, it retains its toxicity, with some people having allergic reactions and others growing feverish or nauseus upon making contact with it; it tends to affect everyone a bit differently. The ignition chamber of this dragon is modified, as well. Like Fire-breathing Dragons, its ignition chamber produces a flammable, thick gas. Unlike other dragons, the chamber does not actually possess the friction glands that ignite the gas it produces, which causes the gas itself to overproduce and store in the dragon's innards, where its toxins are synthesized. This causes the stored gas to become poisonous, and the Weirdire uses this liberally as a weapon. Of course, even should it temporarily run out of stored gas, it has another formiddable weapon - its enormous size.
Necropsies have confirmed that the Weirdire's large, golden-glowing eyes are a mutation that results from the cells in its salivary glads, which produce the initial proteins that make up its toxins before they are synthesized in the kidneys.
Creature of Streike
★ Poisonous breath more toxic than even the dreaded the Akhos.
★ A thick, cocoon-like caste that serves as impeccable (and replenishable) armor, which is also toxic to interact with, making it an excellent defense and offense.
★ Enormous size and strength advantage, being as tall as twenty-five feet at the shoulder and up to fifty feet long.
★ Its jaws and head alone make up a a fifth of its size.
★ Is surprisigly capable of a quick, lumbering run that does not crack its caste.
★ This dragon does not have flight-capable wings, as they degrade quickly with age.
★ Though it is dangerous to engage the shell, once an opening is created the exposed membrane is devastatingly vulerable, and the Dragon's entire internal biology can be fatally disrupted with a penetrative blow to the right spot.
★ It is advised to have a specialist in healing magics on hand, as infection while battling this creature is all but inevitable.

★ Darksight.
★ Its body is a bit lighter than many other top predators, making brute force effective one-on-one, but beware being ganged up on.
★ Toxins can be counteracted by healing evocation of any kind - the toxins are based in negative magic, and so positive magic cancels it out, but only if this is done promptly before it takes effect.

Unlike its fellows, who are said to be non-violent unless attacked, the Zizgran is stated to be a wrathful being, who soars where he pleases and punishes foolish mortals who dare to tred too far beyond their limits. However, others say that such stories are meant only to instill fear in people about the idea of progress and ingenuity by religious zealots, which stands in complete opposition to the heavenly virtues of Temos, but such people are often disregarded due to the general lack of credibility Temos has among mortals. Still, they believe the Zizgran to be a punisher, one who descends to right the wrongdoings of the too-powerful, using its bolts of holy lightning to smite them down. Interestingly, none of the stories speak specifically of what value the Zizgran gains from Diassei.
Trivia: The people of Fortuna do not know it, but the Zizgran is actually an emissary of the unknown Attonian storm deity, not Diassei. Diassei, as a wicked deity imprissoned in Ephilroa (also uknown to Fortunans) is not represented by any of the Celestial Birds.
